DeLand, Florida, warmly known as the “gateway to the beauty of central Florida,” offers a variety of attractions to residents and visitors alike, including several beautiful state parks, eclectic cultural and artistic venues, and unique shopping and dining experiences.
Amidst the small-town feel of DeLand, larger matters of state legislation arise. Since the passage of Amendment 2, DeLand residents may have questions about the legalization of and accessibility to medical marijuana.
Is Medical Marijuana Legal in DeLand?
In 2016, 71% of Florida voters approved Amendment 2, which legalized medical marijuana across the state. Now Florida residents can use medical cannabis for a variety of debilitating medical conditions as determined by a licensed Florida physician.
Medical marijuana has continued to gain support since 2016 and dispensaries continue to pop up across the state, increasing availability for this useful treatment.
Volusia County School District Embraces Medical Cannabis
Adults and children alike are faced with debilitating health conditions, but medical marijuana can aid in alleviating certain associated symptoms. As of December 1, 2018, medical marijuana on a school campus became legal in Volusia County. Qualified parents and caregivers may now administer medical marijuana to their qualified student on campus.
Volusia County is now the third county in the state, along with Broward and Santa Rosa, to allow administration of the substance on school grounds.

How To Qualify For Medical Cannabis
The Medical Use of Marijuana Act, also known as Senate Bill 8A, quickly followed the passage of Amendment 2. This bill further defined how medical marijuana could be used throughout the state, as well as the conditions that could qualify a patient for treatment.
These conditions include:
In addition to the conditions above, Florida medical marijuana doctors may also recommend medical marijuana for the treatment of other “diagnosable, debilitating conditions of like, kind, or class.” This can include conditions such as chronic nonmalignant pain, terminal conditions, and anxiety.
