UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA TO LEAD MARIJUANA RESEARCH IN FLORIDA
Gainesville’s own University of Florida (UF) was recently awarded funding to lead the Consortium for Medical Marijuana Clinical Outcomes Research. Presiding over other universities and researchers in Florida, UF will explore the effects of medical marijuana products used throughout Florida. Researchers will attempt to identify any potentially harmful effects of legal cannabis products, to avoid any potential public risk.
In addition to leading this new consortium, UF will receive $1.5 million annually from the state to fund the project, with $600,000 being allocated towards additional grants to be awarded to other Florida research institutions.
This only goes to add to UF’s interest and focus on medical marijuana research. The university already has several cannabis research programs, including a study on cannabis receptors, and also the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences’ Industrial Hemp Pilot Project. The University of Florida now stands at the forefront of medical marijuana research, both in Florida and nationally.
