Continue reading to find out what conditions qualify for medical marijuana treatment, where you can find medical marijuana doctors, and where in Clearwater you can go to buy legal cannabis!

Clearwater’s Medical Marijuana Approval Process

Before buying medical marijuana from a medical marijuana treatment center (MMTC) or dispensary, you must first visit a qualified medical marijuana doctor. And that’s where we come in!

All CannaMD physicians are board-certified, state-licensed doctors who are qualified to “prescribe” or recommend medical marijuana. (As cannabis is not yet approved by the FDA, it can’t technically be “prescribed” – which is why the term “recommend” is used.)

CannaMD features a number of medical marijuana doctors offices across the state, including a convenient Clearwater location:

CannaMD

13575 58th St N, Suite 200

Clearwater, FL 33760

After a Clearwater CannaMD physician determines that you are eligible for medical marijuana treatment, we will forward our recommendation to the Florida Department of Health. The Florida Department of Health will then provide you with a login to their patient website, where you can complete their application and pay the state-required $75 fee.

You should receive an approval email back in 7 to 21 business days, at which point you can print out your temporary certification and begin buying medical marijuana!

How to Qualify for Medical Marijuana in Clearwater

Senate Bill 8A defines a qualified patient as:

A resident of this state [Florida] who has been added to the medical marijuana use registry by a qualified physician to receive marijuana or a marijuana delivery device for a medical use and who has a qualified patient identification card.

To qualify for medical marijuana in Florida, you must:

  • Be diagnosed by a certified physician with a qualifying condition, and
  • Have permanent or temporary residency in the state of Florida.

A breakdown of these requirements is provided below.

What Conditions Qualify for Medical Marijuana?

Senate Bill 8A states that in order to qualify for medical marijuana treatment in Florida, you must be diagnosed with one of the following conditions:

Additionally, Senate Bill 8A allows for medical marijuana treatment if you suffer from any of the following:

  • Any “diagnosable, debilitating conditions of like, kind, or class” (such as anxiety, depression, or migraines)
  • Terminal conditions (diagnosed by a doctor other than your medical marijuana doctor)
  • Chronic nonmalignant pain (defined as pain caused by a qualifying medical condition that persists beyond the usual course of that condition)

For a more exhaustive list of qualifying conditions, please see our Qualifying Conditions Resource Page.

How Do I Prove Florida Residency?

Besides having a diagnosis for a qualified condition, you’ll also need to prove your permanent or seasonal residency in Florida.

To prove residency, you must present a photo ID, as well as one of the following documents:

  • Copy of a house deed or lease agreement
  • Utility bill (no more than two months old)
  • State ID or driver’s license
  • Passport

If you are wondering whether you meet Florida’s definition of a seasonal resident, Senate Bill 8A defines a seasonal resident as:

Any person who temporarily resides in this state [Florida] for a period of at least 31 consecutive days in each calendar year, maintains a temporary residence in this state, returns to the state or jurisdiction of his or her residence at least one time during each calendar year, and is registered to vote or pays income tax in another state or jurisdiction.
