How Florida Medical Marijuana Renewals Work

Time to renew? Keeping your Florida medical marijuana status active means staying on top of two separate renewal timelines: your physician certification and your state-issued MMUR ID card. Because they may expire on different schedules, it is easy for one to lapse while the other remains active.

Here is what Florida patients need to know about each renewal, when to complete it, and how to avoid an interruption in access to medical marijuana.

Florida Medical Marijuana Renewal Dates

Florida medical marijuana patients have two important timelines to track:

  • A physician certification that lasts 210 days
  • A state-issued Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR) identification card that lasts one year
  • These timelines operate independently and may expire months apart. Patients must keep both active to purchase medical marijuana from a licensed Florida medical marijuana treatment center.

Understanding when and how to renew each one can help prevent an interruption in access.

Florida’s Two Medical Marijuana Renewal Timelines

Your 210-Day Physician Certification

Your physician certification confirms that a qualified physician has evaluated you and determined that medical marijuana is an appropriate treatment option.

CannaMD physicians certify qualified patients for 210 days, which is the longest certification period permitted under Florida law. Your physician also enters your medical marijuana orders into the MMUR.

If your certification and orders expire, you will not be able to purchase medical marijuana, even if your state MMUR ID card remains active. Renewing your certification requires another appointment with a qualified medical marijuana physician.

Your One-Year State MMUR ID Card

Your MMUR ID card is issued by the Florida Department of Health’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU). It expires one year after its approval date.

Patients and caregivers must submit a state renewal application annually and pay the required processing fee. If your card expires, you will not be able to purchase medical marijuana, even if your physician certification and orders remain active.

Renewing your physician certification does not renew your state card. Each renewal must be completed separately.

When Should You Plan Your Renewals?

Use your state card renewal window as your reminder. When the window opens 45 days before your card expires, submit your state renewal. You can use CannaMD’s handy Renewal Calculator to see if it’s time!

Note: Online state applications take an average of 10 business days to process, according to the OMMU. Missing or incorrect information may cause additional delays, so do not wait until your card’s expiration date to apply.

Online applications are generally processed faster than paper applications. To renew online:

  • Open the Your Card page.
  • Select the option to begin your renewal. It will appear during your 45-day renewal window.
  • Review your personal information and make any necessary updates.
  • Confirm or upload your photo and proof of Florida residency.
  • Electronically sign and submit your application.
  • Select “Click Here” to Pay Online.
  • Pay the $75 state processing fee.

Note: The state payment is separate from the cost of your CannaMD physician certification appointment.

Renewing by Mail

Patients and caregivers may also renew by mail. A mailed application must include:

  • The completed application
  • Required proof of Florida residency
  • An eligible passport-style photograph
  • A $75 check or money order payable to the Florida Department of Health
  • Include your Registry ID number and date of birth on the payment. Cash is not accepted.

Mail the application and payment to:

Office of Medical Marijuana Use
PO Box 31313
Tampa, FL 33631-3313

Allow additional time for mailing and processing.

What Changed on July 27, 2026?

Beginning July 27, 2026, patients must have a current or scheduled physician certification with open orders in the MMUR before completing an initial or renewal state MMUR ID card application.

Caregivers must be connected to a valid, active patient in the Registry before completing an initial or renewal application.

Important: If your certification has expired or will expire soon, schedule your physician appointment before attempting to complete your state card renewal.

What If Your Dates Do Not Match?

Different renewal dates are completely normal. Your physician certification timeline is based on your certification and medical marijuana orders, while your state card timeline begins when the Florida Department of Health approves your card.

Log in to the MMUR to view:

  • Your physician certification status
  • The beginning and ending dates of your medical marijuana orders
  • Your state MMUR ID card expiration date
  • The availability of your annual state card renewal application
  • You can also find your state card’s expiration date on the front of your physical MMUR ID card.
