You may have recently received an email like the one below from Florida’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU).
At first glance, it sounds like a major change – but don’t worry. This update does not change who qualifies for Florida’s medical marijuana program or whether you’re still eligible as a patient.
Instead, it changes the requirements for renewing your Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR) ID card.
Here’s what changed, how renewals worked before, and what you’ll need to do going forward.
What Is Changing?
Beginning July 27, 2026, patients will only be able to submit an application – whether it’s their first application or a renewal – for a Florida Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR) ID card if they have a current or scheduled physician certification with active orders in the MMUR.
The same applies to caregivers. To apply for or renew a caregiver ID card, they must be connected to a patient with a valid and active MMUR profile.
While the wording may sound technical, the change is actually fairly straightforward.
How Did Renewals Work Before?
Before this update, your physician certification and your state-issued MMUR ID card were largely treated as two separate renewals.
That meant many patients were able to renew their state-issued medical marijuana card even if their physician certification had already expired.
Although an expired physician certification prevented patients from purchasing medical marijuana until it was renewed, it didn’t necessarily prevent them from renewing their state ID card.
Beginning July 27, those two renewals become more closely connected.
What Do I Need to Do Now?
To help avoid delays, patients should complete their renewals in this order:
- Step 1: Renew your physician certification.
- Your qualified physician will update your certification and active orders in the MMUR.
- Step 2: Renew your Florida Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR) ID card.
- Once your certification is active, you’ll be eligible to submit your state card application or renewal.
For many CannaMD patients, this may already be the order they’ve been following. The difference is that it will now be a requirement under the updated OMMU policy.
Does This Change Who Qualifies for Medical Marijuana?

This update does not change:
- Florida’s qualifying medical conditions
- Who is eligible to become a medical marijuana patient

- Purchase limits
- Possession limits
- The length of time your state-issued card remains valid
The update only changes when patients are eligible to apply for or renew their MMUR ID card.

According to the OMMU, the update aligns the state’s Medical Marijuana Use Registry with active physician certifications.
In other words, patients must now have an active physician certification on file before applying for or renewing their state-issued medical marijuana card.
